A Week of Writing Workshops

If you’re looking for ways to take your writing to the next level, take a look at the Summer Writing Institute at Antioch University in Santa Barbara. From July 28 to August 3, 2013, this inventive conference will give you a chance to participate in an intimate daily workshop with a notable writer in the genre of your choice, plus panel discussions, evening readings, and time to write. Writers in all genres and all levels of experience are encouraged to apply.

How the Program Works

Here’s how it works: Each participant chooses a seminar in fiction, nonfiction, screenwriting, or writing for young people and spends the week learning and practicing specific elements of style and craft with a group of no more than ten students. Working with the same group and one instructor deepens the connections among participants, as they form literary friendships, make professional contacts, and build community with each other.

With more than fifteen workshops and instructors—including novelist Gail Tsukiyama, memoirist Maureen Murdock, screenwriter Robin Swicord, children’s book author and illustrator Bruce Hale, and many other inspiring teachers—this conference offers something for everyone.

“We are delighted to have attracted some of the highest caliber writers in their fields as faculty for this weeklong intensive program,” says SWI director Marcia Meier. “As a result, our selection of workshops is both substantive and creative.”

Application Details

The application deadline is June 15. Workshop descriptions, faculty profiles, and complete application details are posted on the SWI website. Check it out. This summer you could be writing in the heart of beautiful Santa Barbara!
