There’s a lot of great information for poets and writers on Chloe Yelena Miller’s website and blog. Every year she celebrates National Poetry Month by featuring guest bloggers throughout April. This year she’s also celebrating the publication of her poetry chapbook, Unrest, which explores the experience of loss and includes poems with such evocative titles as “Cuban Customs Attempts to Confiscate Her Mangoes,” “Color of the Sea,” and “Salty.”

When Chloe invited me to write a guest post for her site, I thought, “Yikes! I’m not a poet. What can I say about poetry that might interest other writers?” Then I thought of a poem I recently read, which inspired me to discover and write about hidden memories. My guest post is called “How to Write When You Don’t Remember” and suggests a simple exercise to try.

The other guest posts she’s featured are fantastic! Here’s the lineup so far:

In “Letting In and Letting Go,” Shrada P. Shah shares her experience workshopping her poems with Jane Hirshfield and explores how her work as a doctor relates to her poetry. It’s a beautiful, self-reflective piece.

Duende,” by Melissa Fadul, explores poetry written in response to disaster and looks at the way objective correlative creates emotion in readers. She examines the use of objective correlative in Wallace Stevens’s poem “Anecdote of a Jar” and shares two of her poems.

In “Writer’s Companion(s),” Qiana Towns discusses the importance of literary friendship. These are true, wise words for writers at all levels of experience.
